Gina Spiro is Oceana’s General Counsel. Gina was drawn to Oceana’s important ocean conservation mission and its science-based, results-oriented approach.

Having spent most of her career in mission-driven development work, Gina understands the dynamic legal and strategic challenges facing organizations creating measurable change on critical global issues. Prior to joining Oceana, Gina served as Acting Chief Executive Officer of the U.S. government’s Millennium Challenge Corporation, an international development agency dedicated to reducing poverty through economic growth. During her 16 years at MCC, Gina served in multiple other roles, including Acting General Counsel, Deputy General Counsel, Managing Director of Operations, and Senior Director of Corporate Policy and Planning. Gina’s professional experience also includes serving as General Counsel and Chief Administrative Officer of Solar Sister, Inc., a nonprofit working to economically empower women and eradicate energy poverty. Gina started her legal career as a corporate attorney in the private sector. While an associate attorney at a large international law firm, she represented institutional lenders and investors in connection with the development, financing, construction, and operation of domestic and international infrastructure projects, primarily in the energy sector. Gina received her B.A. in American Studies magna cum laude from Fordham University and her J.D. cum laude, Order of the Coif, from Fordham University School of Law, where she also was a member of the Law Review. She is a member of the bar of the State of New York and of the District of Columbia.
